Getting Your Kids to Brush

Getting Your Kids to Brush

If you are lucky, your child goes right to the sink first thing in the morning, and just before bed to brush her teeth. But in many cases, getting your child to take care of her teeth may be a bit of a struggle. If you would like to learn how to avoid the Battle of the Brush, read on.

It may help to let your child choose her own dental products. Toothbrushes come in all sorts of shapes and colors, some of which probably include your child’s favorite cartoon characters or superhero. Make sure that the head of the toothbrush is small enough to reach all of your child’s teeth, and that it has soft bristles. There are also plenty of toothpastes designed for kids. They come in kid-friendly flavors, and as long as it contains fluoride, whatever your child chooses will probably be fine. If you have any questions, you should talk with your dentist.

You might buy your child a spare toothbrush and let her practice brushing the teeth of a toy or stuffed animal. A trip to the library can yield plenty of books and videos about brushing. Praise and encouragement will also work wonders. One of the best things that you can do to encourage good brushing habits is to set a good example for your child. She should see you brushing your teeth, and you might consider brushing along with her. You can also use that time to teach her proper brushing techniques and to make certain that she spends a full two minutes brushing.
